Hornsea Potteries was founded in 1949 by brothers Colin and Desmond Rawson. Driven by a wide array of design influences the pottery quickly grew from being a purveyor of seaside tourist trinkets to the largest studio pottery in the world, employing over 700 people. Hornsea’s rapid growth was generated by widespread popularity and inspirational design.
Located away from the traditional ceramics heartland in Staffordshire, Hornsea developed unique and groundbreaking techniques and designs many of which were influenced by the Rawson’s textile backgrounds.
Hornsea is a great British design story involving some of the giants of British pattern and ceramic design, such as John Clappison .Today, Hornsea remains a much loved and influential brand, with a timeless appeal.
Hornsea designs are now available across a wide array of home wares, wearables, accessories and beers.
Hornsea Pottery Design operates from Hopfrog (beer shop and taproom) at Hornsea Freeport, on the original site of Hornsea Pottery.
Hornsea Pottery Designs and Hopfrog's owner, Nick Burton, has a passion for the Pottery site and the designs, having lived in Hornsea all his life and spent many hours, days and years visiting and working there. He and his family have many connections to Hornsea Pottery and some of the original designers.
In 2020 Hopfrog designed a range of craft beer glasses to pay tribute to the iconic Hornsea designs. The response to these was phenomenal, with interest and sales from across the UK and overseas. The first batch sold out in a few days. Hopfrog now has a growing number of new Hornsea products available that go back to the future - beautifully blending the modern with the past.
Hopfrog is now the UK licensing partner of Hornsea Potteries Intellectual properties USA LLC, working together with new brand partners. Please get in touch if you would like to work with us.
